4 Days In Rome. What We Ate, Where We Stayed & What We Saw

I’ve been to a fair amount of Italy in my time – Lake Como, Tuscany, Milan – but never Rome. It’s always been high up on the list as truth be told I’m a huge history nerd. There is nothing I like more than a museum or historical site. Rome surpassed all of my …

When I stepped back to take this picture earlier i When I stepped back to take this picture earlier it became very apparent to me how much of a disservice I’ve been doing the ceiling with just a shade hanging there.

I’ve been trying to decide between light fittings for quite a while now. Currently stuck between two very modern, sculpture looking chandeliers (the types with angular arms and an exposed orb bulb at the end) but the question is; black... or brass?

Last Sunday’s blog on affordable art really seem Last Sunday’s blog on affordable art really seemed to be something people were invested in. Thousands of you went on to view it; so hopefully some of you found some inspiration for your walls! In that blog I put that you didn’t have to think about art and what you put on the wall in quite such a strict way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Around my flat there’s all sorts of things that have made into frames, or even actually straight onto the wall. The framed multi image page was torn from a Toast mail order catalogue. The monochrome sketch piece was a page from Vogue Paris. You’ll find a postcard from the V&A Gift Shop and a Christmas card someone sent me that was a modernist Christmas tree, which was simply turned upside down to become arrows. For every Picasso print there’s a blurry Polaroid of a glass of wine in Rome. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Taking a bit of time out of this weekend for some Taking a bit of time out of this weekend for some much needed self care. I’ve been determined to ‘do’ so much each day this lockdown. I had to have ‘done’ something that would make me feel like I’d done something productive or something valuable. That’s aside from getting up each day and doing my day job, which now I’m starting to realise is most certainly enough to have ‘done’ in a day. I do not also need to have walked 5 miles, completed a work out, made a batch of soup and written a blog post too. Today, I just sit.

Due to January and my current mental capacity, I h Due to January and my current mental capacity, I haven’t created the artwork for the wall behind the sofa. However, I have order the stupidest amount of supplies for this weekend to try out a few things. You know when you were a kid and on rainy days your mum would try and distract you with PVA glue and tissue paper? Well, we’re going to try the adult version of that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve had it in my head all week that I need to do something creative to try and counteract the days spent stationary at my desk. I promise not to craft any decoupage Love, Live, Laugh signs or anything though.

I first posted the recipe for these highly adaptab I first posted the recipe for these highly adaptable muffins back in Lockdown Part I, remember that? Memories. Anyway, I’m posting them again now because a) I just made a batch and this time adapted it to be apple and peanut butter and b) by all accounts my friends with children will accept absolutely anything they might keep their darling brood* entertained for at least an hour.

You’ll find the link in my Stories, if you fancy a go. It’s a super simple recipe and will withstand a bit of reworking based on whatever you have in your cupboards.

The first blog post of the year is now live. The Affordable Art Edit. Where to find it and where to find decent wooden frames (not dodgy wood effect plastic) that won’t break the bank.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘Art’ is probably too niche of a term for the things that are on my walls. Ultimately I think anything, if presented with care, can look excellent hung on your wall. Mine feature everything from beautiful Picasso prints from @johnlewisandpartners to amusing beer mats I brought back from a bar in Berlin. Pictures from your travels hung up with Washi Tape, greeting cards of artwork I loved and even wrapping paper; these walls have them all.

Even the tulips are in chaos. Even the tulips are in chaos.
I have a question. I’m working on the much reque I have a question. I’m working on the much requested Affordable Art blog currently, hopefully live on Sunday for your browsing pleasure. The word ‘affordable’ is of course subjective, but what exactly would you pay for art? And how important is the framing element for you? Does an IKEA Ribba do the job?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have some follows up to that too; does it make any difference to you if it’s a limited print, or available in smaller numbers, or ultimately do you just want some amazing pieces to hang in frames and ultimately it doesn’t matter if it’s a picture torn from a magazine?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Growing up I can remember vividly the trend for everyone having the same Monet prints on their walls, long before IKEA’s Audrey Hepburn canvas and then Andy Warhol’s quote prints became the go to affordable art of choice. I feel like our tastes have moved so far away from wanting replicas of famous artwork now, but I’m all ears if that’s still something people love.
When life gives you January and a lockdown, eat me When life gives you January and a lockdown, eat melted cheese. On literally everything.
